Award Overview

The Dr. Madan Ela Piya Cancer Award is established in 2082(2025) by Dr. Madan Kumar Piya, who is the first Medical Oncologist of the country and Patron of SAARC Federation of Oncologists (SFO) and SFO-Nepal, to provide support and recognition to promising early career researchers working in the field of oncology, inspiring them to acquire knowledge and skill in oncology subspecialty, further foster to build a successful sustainable career. This award will be established in the auspices platform of SFO-N.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a Nepali Citizen practicing within the country (Nepal)
  • Must be an oncologist: PG student, DM student, Faculty from either Medical, Radiation, Pediatric, Gynecology Oncology or any Surgical oncology specialty
  • Note: Faculty should be SFO-N member or applied for membership for award eligibility

Research Award

Individual fulfilling the criteria can apply with the LOI (Letter of Intent) and summary of the proposed project in structured format. After selection, detailed research proposal along with ethical clearance need to be submitted for the award claim.

Best Paper Award

Any society or Institute conducting the Conference/CME can apply.

Important Dates

Application Opens: Chaitra 1st of every year
Application Closes: Baishak end of every year
Grant Announcement: First week of Ashad every year
Grant Awarded: SFO-N day Ashad 12th every year

Supporting Documents

Eligible applicants will be required to attach the following along with a request in the official email info@sfonepal.org

  • Curriculum Vitae: No more than three pages, 12-point font – spacing as required. Preferably with list of applicant publications or presentations.
  • Research/Project Proposal: In structured format
    • Title and Summary: An abstract in structured format (a short paragraph up to 350 words highlighting its importance and contribution to oncology research)
    • Detail Proposal: With ethical approval from the relevant IRB/ERB upon receipt of the grant to claim the award.
    • Reference Letter: One reference letter from the working institute from head of department Or Institute head upon receipt of the grant to claim the award.

Assessment Method

The assessment process will be conducted by a selection panel of members committee from SFO-N executive board and Education committee.

Criteria Weighted Percentage
Scientific rigor regarding all aspects of the research design, including methodology, hypothesis, measurement of outcomes and statistical analysis 50%
Research project nobleness, new insights and its translational outcomes 30%
Research output as judged by measurable outcomes such as: research publications, adoption of findings or methods into clinical or public health practice 20%
Selection Process
  • Selection Panel members will be required to declare any Conflict of Interest they have with applicants and institutions, and if a conflict is deemed material, they will be removed from assessment of the application.
  • All recommendations and decisions about the finalists and awards winners are in the sole discretion of selection panel within the SFO-N. No correspondence will be entered regarding the final outcomes of the selection process including feedback on any application. This decision is not subject to review or appeal of any kind.
  • For Best paper award, the judging panel identified by the organizer will be responsible for the final decision.

Finalists and Winners

  • Finalists for each category will be notified via email correspondence or telephone.
  • Upon receipt of the research award, the project completion should be notified to SFO-N and research should be published in any repute journal.
  • A Congratulation note with photo and name of Awardee will be published in organization web-site for a period of one year. (applicable for both category award)
